Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle is a market town on the north bank of the River Tees. The town is named after and built around a mediaeval castle ruin.

The Bowes Museum is a world-class museum of art, design, and fashion, housed in a stunning French-style chateau in Barnard Castle.

Bowlees Visitor Centre

Bowlees Visitor Centre is located in the heart of Upper Teesdale and provides information about the area, including the geology, flora, and fauna. It has a café, gift shop, and picnic area.

Castle of Barnard Castle

Barnard Castle is a historic market town on the River Tees. The castle ruins, owned by English Heritage, overlook the town and the river.

City of Durham

Durham is a city in northeast England, south of Newcastle upon Tyne. The River Wear loops around the Romanesque Durham Cathedral and Norman Durham Castle. North of the castle, 13th-century, medieval Crook Hall is home to gardens and a maze. South of the river, Durham University offers a Botanic Garden with woodland and tropical plants, and the Oriental Museum exhibiting Asian, Egyptian and Middle Eastern artefacts.

Some of the most impressive sections of the Pennine Way National Trail are found in Teesdale and there are numerous excellent circular walks. The Teesdale Way also goes through the dale, it is a long-distance walk between the Cumbrian Pennines and the North Sea coast of North Yorkshire in England.
